MA-25®

Ablative Material

MA-25 is a medium density, room temperature curing, ablator/insulator which has been used extensively for thermal protection on aircraft and space launch vehicles. On the Space Shuttle, short duration exposure to temperatures exceeding 1200°F may be encountered. In aircraft engine applications, continuous use temperatures range from 300 - 600° F. The MA-25 material has been FAA certified for fire proof protection of fan thrust reversers per FAR Part 25.1181a and FAA advisory Circular AC 20-135. The material is a filled elastomeric silicone.  MA-25 is field repairable, should an original coating experience damage while in service.

Applicable Substrates:

MA-25 has proven to be effective when applied to a variety of substrate materials, which include:

  • Aluminum, bare and/or chemical conversion coated
  • Inconel
  • Titanium
  • Stainless Steel
  • Composites (Graphite/Epoxy)
  • Other plastics such as ABS could be considered, but would need to be qualified by the customer

All of the above materials would need to be tested and qualified by the customer to ensure that coating characteristics meet their specific situational requirements.

Prior Uses:

MA-25 has been flight qualified through extensive testing for the following systems:

  • X-15 flight research vehicle – Thermal insulation for Mach 8 flight.
  • Titan IIIC universal payload fairing – Ascent heat protection
  • CF6 fan reversers of DC-10, 767, 757, 747, 737, MD-11, L-1011, A-300, A-310 and A-330 aircraft. The material is used as a flame resistant insulation and firewall protection for engine nacelles and engine components.
  • Space Shuttle External Fuel Tank - Ascent heat protection at shock interference locations.
  • KC-135 engine retrofit - Firewall protection.
  • High performance missiles - Thermal Protection
